In the age of collaboration, even presidential candidates want to jump on the wagon. South Bend’s gay Mayor Pete Buttigieg, saw an opportunity when Lil Nas X came out as gay at the end of Pride Month. X is gay and he’s got a hit. Buttigieg wanted in. It makes even more sense when you see the list of X’s collaborators; Billy Ray Cyrus, Young Thug, BTS and Dolly Parton. But Lil Nas X wasn’t having any of it. While he is not personally opposed to Pete Buttigieg, he said he doesn’t want to be seen as supporting any particular Presidential candidate, even if he’s a gay comrade.
It was all supposed to happen at an Internet Live event on July 25th. But after Mayor Pete heard X wasn’t attending the event, he decided to not attend either. “Old Time Road” has been on Rolling Stone’s top 100 chart for 20 weeks. That’s the kind of accomplishment that attracts attention.
If you have been following along with us this summer, you know that Lil Nas X, week after week, has had his name in the middle of something popular. It has all been driven by his giant summer hit “Old Town Road,” which has been staring down at the competition for over four months. Now with it’s 17th week atop the list, it surpasses Mariah Carey’s 1995 hit “One Sweet Day” for the longest time spent on the Billboard top 100 list. Pretty wild when you think about how quickly all this has transpired for the young country singing rapper.
Mariah handled the situation with class and respect. Holding the record for nearly 25 years, she put up an Instagram post that showed her with a torch passing it to Lil Nas X in front of a Billboard backdrop. The post’s opening line reads “Sending love and congrats to @lilnasx on breaking one of the longest running records in music history!” Well said, very gracious. Summer 2019 belongs to Lil Nas X.
Lil Nas X is being sued $25 million over Carry On, a song he released before Old Time Road. A company called The Music Force claims to own the copyright of a song titled “Carry On” by Bobby Caldwell. The company also says that Lil Nas X’s song Carry On hijacked parts of this Caldwell song from the 1980s.
Lil Nas is signed with Sony Music. The Music Force is suing Sony Music along with Lil Nas. The Music Force wants $10 million in damages to “remedy the confusion in the marketplace” and $15 million in punitive damages. Sony Music certainly has the financial power to put up a good fight in court.
Lil Nas X’s country/rap hit Old Town Road has been looking down at ALL the other songs on the Billboard Top 100 for almost four months now. When you think about how long that is to remain the most popular of the most popular, it’s truly remarkable. Adding to the legacy of the song, a new remix was released featuring rap artist Young Thug, and yodeling icon, young Mason Ramsey.
One must remember Mason Ramsey even his name is not household. He’s the yodeling kid … THE yodeling kid. Check him out on youtube if you need a refresher. Anyhow, he’s on there, and while he isn’t yodeling, he lays down a smooth verse as the last of the quartet to feature on the new remix. Don’t expect this to be the last time the young and talented Mason Ramsey features on a popular song, and EXPECT Old Town Road to continue to crush the charts after this release.
Young Thug’s verse is par for the course with a traditional Young Thug feature, and he goes on to sing the “Can’t nobody tell me nothing” hook at the end. The bigger news about Young Thug however was his comments on Lil Nas X’s decision to reveal his sexuality.
In an interview on Jumper, Young Thug said he thought X’s decision to come out during Gay Pride Month was a “G’s Move”. While ultimately it was all support and love, Thug said he felt X maybe shouldn’t have revealed his sexuality just yet. Paraphrasing the rappers comments, his point was essentially that people (especially in the rap community) are going to be now more worried about the fact that X is gay than the content and quality of his music.
Do you agree with Young Thug, and have you heard the newest Old Town Road Remix?
Check out the new remix here which features a very cool animated emoji video to go along with it.
More Lil Nas X news as the young sensation continues to make headlines this summer, and this time it’s in the kitchen.
Fresh off his new release of the “7” EP, hit song Panini has attracted the likes of Gordon Ramsay to, well, teach Lil Nas X how to make a panini of course. X claimed he had never made one before, and in the video it showed. He was incredibly awkward in the kitchen giving way to Ramsay to show him the ropes.
Sauce, meat, cheese, and extras were all in the mix as the panini’s were thrown on the griddle, and the pair hoped their panini’s wouldn’t be a meanie. Fortunately, they were not, as they came out perfectly toasted. To add a little flare to the mix, Lil Nas X cut his open with an axe. Yes, a beautiful stainless steel axe. All in all this was a great publicity stunt for the master chef / entertainer Gordon Ramsay, while X learned a thing or two about the heat in the kitchen.
Check out the video of the two in the kitchen here. What’s next for Lil Nas X? Drop a note below and share your thoughts.
June was a big month for Lil Nas X — he released his first EP, his hit Old Town Road reached 14 weeks straight at #1 on the charts, and to cap it all off, he got a monkey off his back that was likely there for quite some time. June is also gay pride month, and that proverbial monkey was in fact the news that Lil Nas X is gay, and he announced it in a rather laid back and casual way.
Taking to social media as he often does, Lil Nas X through a series of tweets revealed and confirmed his sexuality several times using humor, wit, and sarcasm. It was a tweet on Sunday that was the groundbreaker and has over 500K likes and 100K retweets.
“Some of y’all already know, some of y’all don’t care, some of y’all not gone fwm no more. But before this month ends i want y’all to listen closely to c7osure.” The tweet was followed by a rainbow emoji, and starface emoji’s.
After seeing the tweet and going back to read the lyrics of C7osure (off of “7” his EP) it became very clear the song is 100% about his battle and need to come out of the closet — for closure of course!
Back to twitter, Lil Nas X took any jokes or slanderous comments as exactly that, and instead of trying to fight them, he embraced them, and made jokes of the jokes and slander of the slander.
“Dead*ss thought I made it obvious” he tweeted while posting the cover of his EP and focusing in on one of the large buildings in the background that was rainbow colored. He’d then go on to say “Just because I’m gay dont mean I’m not straight”. Finally to clear everything up, he let twitter know that “Old town road is literally about horses”.
Lil Nas X has to be given a lot of credit for the manner in which he conducted himself through a very challenging moment in his young life. He wasn’t seeking attention, praise, or glorification, but rather just the freedom and relief of the world knowing who he truly is. He did so with grace, humor, and respect for others opinions. The only question about Lil Nas X that should be asked now is, what music is next for the young up-and-coming artist.
With Lil Nas X (Montero Lamar Hill) is a twenty-year-old American rapper, singer/songwriter from Atlanta, Georgia. He began as an internet personality, but came to the forefront with his hit 2018 single “Old Time Road.” The core song is terrific, but Lil Nas X raises the level by finding a way to combine his urban rap with the pure country sound of Billy Ray Cyrus – Miley’s dad.
The remix with Cyrus went viral in April, 2019 breaking Drake’s record for most streamed song in a week. Though the song ran up multiple charts including number one on Billboard’s Top 100, its listing on the magazine’s Hot Country Songs Chart was taken down because “it does not embrace enough elements of today’s country music to chart” as a country song. Boo to them. Before all the attention around the song, the wit and rhythm of Lil Nas X began to find an audience on the internet when he was 16. He was clever enough to break through the noise by connecting himself to Nicki Minaj. The strength of this creative powerhouse makes Lil Nas X a force to watch in the future.
