MTV and Diddy are bringing back the hit show “Making the
Band” next year. The premise of the show is to form a band from scratch via
auditions, build group chemistry and then follow the progress of that group as
their careers take off. In its prior
seasons the show provided a platform for groups such as O-Town, Day26, and
The new season will become more global, a reflection of the
more international music business that exists today. Diddy and his team are currently scouring the
globe for the best undiscovered talent for next season’s show. It remains to be
seen if the focus will be on developing Pop / R&B / Hip Hop groups as in
season’s past or if the broader search will result in broader genres.
Changes to Making
the Band represent just one of the many adjustments to current shows and
new shows being added to the MTV lineup in the coming year.
In light of Disney’s recent trend of reproducing films from their golden era into modern live action movies, Disney has hit a fork in the road when it comes to classifying their next big release, and one of their most popular titles of all time, The Lion King.
Almost all of the movies from the Golden Era were animated cartoons so to speak, and while other remakes such as Mulan and Aladdin are truly “live-action” movies with real humans on screen, the Lion King is something different. While the voices of the characters feature some of the most popular actors and actresses in the industry, the characters themselves are animated, computer generated, almost, real, but definitely not actually real, because they’re well, talking animals.
Disney still isn’t sure how to market or categorize The Lion King for awards for example, as the movie is expected to be in the conversation for many awards come years end. While the music and soundtrack will stand well on their own, what Disney has to decide still (movie is released July 19th) is how it will advertise the film in terms of classification. It is almost certainly an animation, CGI like, or even in the category of VR. Think some scenes from Game of Thrones with the dragons.
The question remains, will The Lion King be in the same category as the likes of Toy Story, or more along the lines of the Jungle Book which had both live action actors and VR effects. How do you think Disney will promote the upcoming hit, and are you anxiously awaiting to see it?
Beyonce is a powerful figure, to the average person. Just her sheer aurora commands the presence of a room. Seth Rogen, a pretty famous dude himself, will be the first to tell you.
Upon completion of the The Lion King premier event earlier this week, Rogen popped on to the Jimmy Kennel show. According to Rogan, Director Jon Favreau had the entire cast receive a solo introduction before the premier. When Beyonce was announced, she received a standing ovation from the entire audience.
“I was like, she’s getting a standing ovation just for existing! Her mere presence was a reason to stand and go crazy, and I totally got it.” said Rogen in great humor. “I was like yeah, we should be celebrating, we made it, we’re all in a room with Beyonce”.
Apparently the first time Seth tried to approach Beyonce a decade ago her security team shut it down rather convincingly. Rogan spilled his drink on himself in the process, he laughingly admitted.
“(For that) I was wary of going near her, ‘cause I look like someone who you would want to keep away from Beyonce in general” he joked.
All jokes aside, Rogen and Beyonce have several scenes together in the CGI animated version of The Lion King and have had a great relationship on cast. Kennel said he loved the premier, for which he was in attendance for.

Destiny Hope ‘Miley’ Cyrus was born edgy in 1992. There has never been a time when she was not edgy and there has never been a time when she wasn’t successful. At 12, with no prior experience, she got the role of Hannah Montana over 1,000 other girls. Her vibrant personally was evident even in the audition process.
Her dad, country singer Billy Ray Cyrus, now famous for his featured role in Lil Nax X’s hit “Old Town Road,” was always in support, giving her free rein to go where her head took her. And it took her to strange places. It started with her earlier than normal drive to act and sing. She played Hannah Montana, a tweenage singing star. And as life often imitates art, at 16 she released her first album called Breakout, the title of which implies what was to come. Miley made the point again with her second album, Can’t Be Tamed, which feature a body revealing video for her biggest hit “Wrecking Ball.” To her TV / film acting and her singing careers, Miley has added concert headliner and TV personality. She hosted the Video Music Awards one year and was a chair turner on The Voice for two seasons. From the beginning Miley Cyrus has collected award after award for her work – last count there have been more than 180 nominations and awards. Pushing the envelope works for her.
Remember Ariana Grande’s emotional performance a few weeks back in Pittsburgh? Well, according to Grande, she is “still processing a lot” as she continues through her Sweetener Tour across the USA, which will eventually head to Europe. Breaking out in tears during her latest performance in St. Louis, she took to twitter afterwards saying “I feel everything very intensely, and I have committed to doing this tour during a time in my life when I’m still processing a lot. So sometimes I cry a lot”
Over the span of the last two years there has been a lot going on in the life of the pop-star. From the suicide bombing at her concert in Manchester back in May 2017, to the death of Mac Miller, to the end of her relationship with comedian Pete Davidson, there has been a tremendous amount of emotions for Grande to deal with, all the while releasing a new album and peforming it on tour.
Grande will head back to Manchester this August as a headliner for Manchester Pride, her first performance back in Manchester since the suicide bombing in 2017. We expect there to be much more tears and emotion from Grande over the next handful of performances as she continues to fight the internal struggles that have plagued her emotionally for quite some time now.
Disney is releasing an animated web television series spin-off of the Monsters
Inc. franchise titled Monsters at Work. The visuals of a new
character from Monsters at Work has been revealed to the general public.
Ben Feldman is the voice actor for the character Tylor Tuskmon, an eager and
talented mechanic. Feldman showed the image to the public through an Instagram
post on June 12th.
image presents a thin and yellow character with bright blue eyes. A lot of
personality is clearly present in the image. The character is blessed with
horns, a bright blue hat and two white teeth sticking out. His body language
shows incredible enthusiasm and readiness for the job at hand. He is carrying a
red toolkit in his left hand and a silver tool in his right hand. He has thin
feet with black nails at the end. Everything about his body language suggests
that he is an innocent soul who is excited about his work.
Actor Will Smith made sure that his passion for Bollywood style movies was
infused into Aladdin – a natural fit. Films from India have a specific style in
the acting and especially in the singing and group dancing.
Smith has visited India several times for personal and professional reasons
and when he accepted the role as the Genie, he asked Guy Ritchie, the film’s director, to put a Bollywood influence into the movie. It led to the “full Bollywood
flavor” in a Prince Ali sequence.
At a Tokyo red carpet event, Will Smith stated that he tried to put Bollywood style into his own acting and that he’s interested in future collaborations with Bollywood film makers.
The word “Bollywood” is a combination of the words “Hollywood” and “Bombay.” It refers to the huge movie industry that has grown up in India. The funny thing is that the name of the city Bombay has since been changed to Mumbai – maybe it should be called Mollywood.
Indie music has broad appeal, it can be used as a calming soundtrack to study to or as the background for a pregame with your closest pals. It has often crossed over to mainstream, which can be heard through the music of MGMT, Vampire Weekend, and Passion Pit. However, Latin Indie music is something that gets overlooked. With the help of Spotify, I have been able to expand my listening tastes. I’ve discovered are some talented musicians in the Latin Indie community who I wanted you to know about.
5. Los Wálters
Hailing from Puerto Rico, electronic pop duo Los Wálters have an exciting, upbeat style. The grooves this band creates very energetically display intense analog drum samples and rupturing synths. Soaking their vocals in reverb helps the band create a swirling, distinct sound. Los Wálters effortlessly combine their indie vocals with a charming arrangement of crisp electronic music. Check out two of their songs “Calma” and “Fragancia” to get a feel for their exciting outfit.
4. Helado Negro
Although born in America, Helado Negro has been a dominant figure in expanding the genres of Latin and Folk. Creating spacious, experimental music that rotates between Spanish and English, Negro has managed many musical projects in the past. Negro has produced ten albums, spanning over the course of ten years since his first release, “Awe Owe”. Some albums are all in Spanish, which powerfully highlight his Ecuadorian roots. On March 8th, 2019, Negro released This Is How You Smile”. The full length is mainly downtempo, focusing on minimal, acoustic production. Negro’s latest album highlights the sheer beauty of simplicity- incorporating gentle melodies with an even calmer, reposed voice. Listen to “Please Won’t Please” and “Pais Nublado”
Maintaining a mysterious and disguised persona is Cuco. We don’t know much about him, other than the fact that his luscious bedroom pop sound has been making steady waves across the internet. His Spotify description features a bit about Papa John’s pizza burning his mouth- and gives us nothing else about his journey as a musician. However, his sparkling indie sound is very intriguing. His most recent feat is a stupendous collaboration with EDM guru Dillon Francis, called “Fix Me”. Cuco is a witty guy, often showing off his sense of humor in addition to his talented musicianship. Check out his songs “CR-V” and “Drown”, the latter featuring lo-fi pop songstress, Clairo.
2. The Chamanas
Some may know The Chamanas from their collaboration with electronic dance producers ODESZA, on the trumpet-heavy track “Everything at Your Feet”. The four piece outfit creates a very tranquil, melodic indie pop music that mixes Brazilian, Bossa Nova, and Indie styles. One of their songs,“Purple Yellow Red and Blue” was brought to the limelight when it was remixed by American band Portugal The Man. A few years later, The Chamanas covered Portugal The Man’s boisterous hit “Feel It Still”. The cover takes a much more casual approach, playing with a slow tempo in the verse and speeding up in the chorus. Lead vocalist Paulina Reza has a very captivating sound, which is illuminated on tracks like “Dulce Mal” and “La Verdad”.
1. Juan Wauters
Originally from Uruguay and now residing in New York City,
Juan Wauters has established a home for himself in the Latin indie community.
Crafting simple folk jams and catchy guitar rhythms, Juan released several
albums on Brooklyn-based label Captured Tracks. Many of his songs are upbeat,
acoustic grooves that tell tales of love, loneliness, and the triumphs of life.
Much of Wauters’ music is reminiscent to a relaxing day by the beach. Wauters’
songwriting skills are faultless- mixing his tuned indie rock sound with
vivacious, yet delicate vocals. This January, Juan unveiled his album “La Onda
de Juan Pablo”. Check out two of my favorites from some of his earlier works,
“I’m All Wrong” and “Blues Chilango”.
