NBCUniversal Vice Chairman Ron Meyer resigned this Tuesday after news of his affair with actress Charlotte Kirk came to light. Meyer was being extorted by a pair of directors who knew about the affair, as well as the $2 million hush money “settlement” paid to Kirk to keep the affair quiet. As a result, NBCUniversal has ended Meyer’s 25-year run with the company.
Scandal and Extortion
Though Meyer did not name Kirk in his statement, inside sources for Variety confirmed Kirk’s identity. Meyer said the affair was “very brief and consensual” and occurred 8 years ago, over the course of two weeks. Following it, Meyer reportedly paid Kirk $2 million in four installments to keep silent about the fling.
But others eventually learned of the arrangement, and used it to blackmail the executive. Charlotte Kirk’s boyfriend, filmmaker Neil Marshall, and her ex-boyfriend, filmmaker Joshua Newton, used the information against Meyer. The extorters threatened to reveal the affair and the $2 million cover up if Meyer did not assist them with their film projects.
Eventually, Meyer says he had to come clean about the story as a means of controlling the crisis.
Meyer said in his statement:
“I made this disclosure because other parties learned of the settlement and have continuously attempted to extort me into paying them money or else they intended to falsely implicate NBCUniversal, which had nothing to do with this matter, and to publish false allegations about me.”
Lure of the Rich and Powerful
The Meyer affair was not the first time that Kirk, who has appeared in Ocean’s 8, Vice, and How to Be Single, has had an entanglement with a studio exec. In 2013 and 2014, Kirk had an extramarital affair with Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara. In 2019, he resigned after texts between the two came to light. Sources also revealed that Tsujihara had used his position to cast Kirk in movie and television roles.
Kirk claims none of Tsujihara’s behavior was inappropriate. She also purportedly tried to keep the Daily Mail and The Hollywood Reporter from running exposés on the matter.
The British actress also reportedly dated James Packer, an Australian billionaire and partner at RatPac Entertainment.
