It was the kind of game American soccer fans envision their international icon having when their country needs a big performance. Christian Pulisic and team USA defeated Jamaica 3-1 Wednesday on the eve of the 4th of July, and advanced to the 2019 Gold Cup Final where they will take on rivals Mexico.
The opening 10 minutes was an onslaught on the Jamaican goal, and Weston McKennie capped off the spell with a goal to give the USA an early lead. Pulisic later in the first half would have a slick free kick saved by Blake who made some quality saves for Jamaica to keep them in the match. As the second half kicked off, it was Pulisic who this time would not be denied, putting the USA up 2-0 in the 52nd minute.
Jamaica would manage to get one back in the 69th minute off a header from Shamar Nicholson, making for a nervy ending for the red white and blue. Up pops that man again, as Pulisic pounced all over a rebound in the 87th minute to seal the deal for the USMNT in Nashville with a brace.
Pulisic has been the American soccer poster boy for the last few years. Deprived of an opportunity to showcase his talent on the World Cup Stage in 2018, Pulisic is doing all he can to help the USA defend their 2017 Gold Cup Championship with big time performances like that of Wednesday nights. Signed away from Borussia Dortmund by Chelsea this spring for $58M this Gold Cup run could be the start of a big campaign for the 20 year old wonder boy from Lancaster Pennsylvania. He’ll be a featured man for Frank Lampard’s Chelsea side this year who will compete in the Champions League and English Premier League, and now has a chance to lead team USA over Mexico in the Gold Cup Final.
The final takes place this Sunday night 8pm EST at Soldier Field in Chicago. What’s your prediction for Sunday’s game and thoughts on Pulisic’s performance Wednesday night? Drop a line in the comment box below.
