Juice concentrate is a cost-efficient and convenient way for companies to transport their products all over the country. But how is juice concentrate made? And is it healthy? In this post, we’ll give you all the information about juice concentrate and its effect on your health.

How is juice concentrate made?

When you squeeze a fruit for its juice, what comes out is about 90% water. Manufacturers heat this juice, evaporating the water, and leaving behind a syrupy liquid known as juice concentrate.

Once the concentrate is drawn, the manufacturer can then add artificial flavors or colors, high fructose corn syrup and preservatives. Finally, the juice concentrate is pasteurized to kill any microorganisms that may cause it to spoil.

Is juice concentrate healthy?

Juice concentrate is fairly unhealthy for a variety of reasons.

First, the heating process destroys beneficial enzymes and vitamins that are naturally present in fruit. Second, the addition of sugar means more unnecessary calories. Finally, juice concentrate contains no fiber, a key nutrient that many seek from fresh produce. At the end of the day, concentrate is pretty much just sugar water.

To buy or not to buy

Many products contain fruit concentrate, including bottled juice, preserved fruit cups and even candy. The important question is, “Will consuming juice concentrate cause damage to my health?”

If you’re looking for a sugary treat to satisfy your sweet tooth, then there’s no harm in indulging in a small can of preserved fruit or a little bag of soft candy. Even though the word “fruit” appears in the name of fruit concentrate, it should be thought of as any other processed food. Eating it in small quantities won’t hurt you, but if you make it a large part of your diet, it will have negative effects on your health.

For people looking to eat a balanced diet and live a healthy lifestyle, it’s best to stick with real, fresh fruit. You’ll get the sweetness that you crave but you’ll also get a healthy dose of vitamins and fiber.
