The 2020 Billboard Latin Music Awards show marked its 30th anniversary. It had been scheduled for April, but was postponed, like many other events, because of the pandemic. And this awards show was not virtual, instead it was live at the BB & T Center in Sunrise, Florida. There were in-person performances and presenters led by host Gaby Espino who made it festive. The audience wore masks. So, hopefully it will not turn out to be a supper-spreader event.

The Awards

Maluma accepted the Billboard Spirit of Hope Award for his creation of El Arte de los Sueñosto, a charity that gives back to youth. He explained that “art and music saved my life, allowed me to dream and create hopes.”

Ozuna and Bad Bunny came into the night with 14 nominations each, but it was Bad Bunny and Daddy Yankee who went home with seven awards each.

Billboard honored “Despacito,” written by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, as the Latin Song of The Decade.

Recognized for his work as a singer, actor, television host and philanthropist, The Billboard Hall of Fame Award went to Carlos Vives.

Enrique Iglesias Honored as Top Latin Artist of All Time

Enrique Iglesias was awarded Top Latin Artist of All Time. Presenter Pitbull said, “He’s a writer, composer, singer, performer. He’s a living legend, and it’s a true honor to call him my friend and my dog. He is music.”

Accepting the award, Iglesias said, “I want to thank my friend Pitbull and I want everyone who is here tonight to have a good time. I also want to tell all of my fans thank you for everything in the passage of my career. I miss you so much, and to all of you who are watching from home, take care.”

Iglesias is Billboard’s most awarded artist, earning 47 awards. The star has sold over 180 million albums in his 25 year career.

The Performance

Ozuna performed his latest single, “Hawái,” then “Despeinada” and “Mamacita” together with a virtual backup by will.i.am, J. Rey Soul, and Taboo from the Black Eyed Peas.

Toward the end of the show, he came back to debut his song “Gracias.” And to the audience’s delight, his two kids, Juan and Sofia, joined him on stage as the performance ended.
