The Biden campaign lauded the historic peace agreement between Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain on Wednesday. In an online statement, Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden commented that he welcomes the normalization of ties between Israel and its new Gulf partners. He added that it was a good step toward an eventual two-state solution between Israel and Palestine, and would bring stability to the Middle East.

“I welcome the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain taking steps to normalize ties with Israel,” the former vice president wrote in his statement. “It is good to see others in the Middle East recognizing Israel and even welcoming it as a partner. A Biden-Harris administration will build on these steps, challenge other nations to keep pace, and work to leverage these growing ties into progress toward a two-state solution and a more stable, peaceful region.”

White House Ceremony

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump is hoping that the historic truce between the Jewish State and its neighbors will help boost his own election prospects. The so-called “Abraham Accords” became official on Wednesday, when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu signed the deal with the foreign ministers of Bahrain and the UAE, from the South Lawn of the White House. Trump served as a mediator of the treatise. As is emblematic of 2020, no hand-shaking was permitted due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Trump called the moment an “historic day for peace,” adding that “after decades of division and conflict, we mark the dawn of a new Middle East.” Bahrain and the UAE are the first Arab nations to establish diplomatic ties with Israel since 1994, when Jordan and Israel normalized relations. Back in 1979, Egypt became the first Arab neighbor of Israel’s to recognize its existence.

And while Palestinian authorities have called the Abraham Accords a “betrayal,” Trump was optimistic that the deal “will serve as the foundation for a comprehensive peace across the entire region.”
