Every football fan’s favorite Monday night of the year is week 1 of the NFL season where ESPN’s Monday Night Football has not one, but two feature games to open the season. Unfortunately, for ESPN, the start of the first game was not positive. Their new scoreboard graphic was roundly criticized. Throughout the first half of the New Orleans Saints – Houston Texan game, fans took to Twitter destroying the new scoreboard graphic which featured a yellow background where the down & distance is found. The color yellow, which usually signals there was a flag on the play, flashed after every play when the down and distance changed. People were confused and bothered enough to tweet. Despite the original mistake, give them credit, ESPN adjusted. Mid-game, the production team put a new background in place and launched it live for the second half.  Order was restored to down & distance and fans were no longer confused about whether or not there was a flag on the previous play.
Dallas Cowboys all-pro, running back Ezekiel ‘Zeke’ Elliot has been holding out all pre-season as he petitions for a new contract that will make him the highest paid running back in the league. Zeke has been one of the most productive backs in the NFL since he came into the league in 2016, though he’s had the advantage of playing behind Dallas’s star-studded offensive line. The Cowboys have made the playoffs in two of the last three seasons on the backs of that line, Zeke and quarterback Dak Prescott, who is also looking for a new deal. After the Cowboys second preseason game, owner Jerry Jones joked with the media, “Zeke Who,” in response to rookie running back Tony Pollard’s 42-yard performance, which was capped by a touchdown. The comment was an attempt at comedic relief relating to the tense contract negotiation that has been ongoing for the last month. Jones has no intention of letting Zeke go and views Pollard as a great backup option behind Zeke. Elliot has 2 years left on his rookie deal and is set to make a base salary this upcoming season of $3.9 million. Technically, he can be fined 40K per day for every day of training camp he has missed thus far, but that will go away when a deal is finally done. Reports were released that Zeke was not happy about Jones’s joke, although Jason Witten, who recently returned to the Cowboys after a year in the ESPN booth, denies that Zeke took any offense, saying, “I thought it was a beautiful comment. Like everybody, I hope this gets resolved and Zeke is in there sooner rather than later.”  He added, “No, [the joke] wouldn’t bother me. It didn’t bother Zeke either.  Trust me, there’s nobody who loves Ezekiel Elliott more than Jerry Jones does. I wouldn’t have taken it that way and I’m sure Zeke didn’t either.” There is no doubt signing Zeke to an extension is a priority for the Cowboys who are the wealthiest franchise in the NFL and have no shortage of cash. They also have made it a priority to extend current quarterback Dak Prescott who has progressed over his first three seasons in the NFL since winning offensive rookie-of-the-year over Zeke in 2016. When this will all get done, nobody outside of the Cowboys organization really knows, but one would think it’s inevitable given the level of importance Elliot has for the team. Fantasy owners and Cowboy fans alike have suffered some major headaches throughout August as this situation has unfolded, but we have little doubt Zeke will suit up against the Giants in Arlington, Texas when the Cowboys open their season on September 8th.

Ozy fest, which New York City describes as its SXSW and The New York Times describes as “part music festival, part TED talk, part food fair” comes to NYC this weekend July 20th and 21th.  As though the heat generated by the star-studded line up isn’t enough, an uninvited guest will be the expected 100 degree temperatures.  The 40,000 attendees may be wilted, but they will also be stimulated by “musical guests John Legend, Miguel, Jazzy Amra and Arizona; leading politicians Stacey Abrams and Gov. John Kasich; comedians Trevor Noah, Dulcé Sloan and Ronny Chieng; thought leaders Malcolm Gladwell, Deepak Chopra, Mark Cuban, and Spike Lee; celebrity chefs Marcus Samuelsson, Padma Lakshmi and Rachael Ray, among others.”

The $1.5 million production is co-hosted by OZY co-founder Carlos Watson and Yankees All-star and Entrepreneur Alex Rodriguez.  The Great Lawn of Central Park is the site and since its New York City, it naturally causes controversy.  It starts with the cost of admission that goes as high as $400 for a place that has had gigantic, free summer events stretching back a generation.  Many people will be priced out of what is likely to be some hot fun in the city.

Taylor Swift is angry.  Rights to her first six albums have been sold to Scooter Braun as part of a deal in which he acquired Swift’s original label Big Machine from its owner Scott Borchetta.  Braun is famous for discovering Justin Bieber as a teen while Borchetta is famous for finding Taylor Swift as a teen.  The problem is that Swift has a blood feud with Braun.  That he has the rights to her music is galling to her.

Swift’s emotional response to news of the sale caused a social media fire storm with stars lining up on each side of the dispute.

This is an old story told by modern artists.  Back at the beginning of the modern record business, in the 1950s, it was common for record labels and music publishers to connive a way into owning the creative output of young, naïve recording artists.  The lure of recorded fame lowered the guard of many blues, R&B and rock & roll artists of that time.  See the film Cadillac Records starring Beyonce to get a sense of how it worked.  Other famous copyright battles were waged by Billy Joel against his original manager and by Sir Paul McCartney against Michael Jackson for the Beatles catalog.  Today they say that content is king.  It always has been.

Taylor Swift is no fool.  She apparently went to Borchetta when she was leaving his label to sign with Universal to ask for the rights to her albums.  No agreement was reached.  She left knowing they would be sold eventually.  It was the sale to arch enemy Scooter Braun that caused her explosion.  Sources:,,

June was a big month for Lil Nas X — he released his first EP, his hit Old Town Road reached 14 weeks straight at #1 on the charts, and to cap it all off, he got a monkey off his back that was likely there for quite some time. June is also gay pride month, and that proverbial monkey was in fact the news that Lil Nas X is gay, and he announced it in a rather laid back and casual way.

Taking to social media as he often does, Lil Nas X through a series of tweets revealed and confirmed his sexuality several times using humor, wit, and sarcasm. It was a tweet on Sunday that was the groundbreaker and has over 500K likes and 100K retweets.

It read:

“Some of y’all already know, some of y’all don’t care, some of y’all not gone fwm no more. But before this month ends i want y’all to listen closely to c7osure.” The tweet was followed by a rainbow emoji, and starface emoji’s.

After seeing the tweet and going back to read the lyrics of C7osure (off of “7” his EP) it became very clear the song is 100% about his battle and need to come out of the closet — for closure of course!

Back to twitter, Lil Nas X took any jokes or slanderous comments as exactly that, and instead of trying to fight them, he embraced them, and made jokes of the jokes and slander of the slander.

“Dead*ss thought I made it obvious” he tweeted while posting the cover of his EP and focusing in on one of the large buildings in the background that was rainbow colored. He’d then go on to say “Just because I’m gay dont mean I’m not straight”. Finally to clear everything up, he let twitter know that “Old town road is literally about horses”.

Lil Nas X has to be given a lot of credit for the manner in which he conducted himself through a very challenging moment in his young life. He wasn’t seeking attention, praise, or glorification, but rather just the freedom and relief of the world knowing who he truly is. He did so with grace, humor, and respect for others opinions. The only question about Lil Nas X that should be asked now is, what music is next for the young up-and-coming artist.

With Lil Nas X (Montero Lamar Hill) is a twenty-year-old American rapper, singer/songwriter from Atlanta, Georgia. He began as an internet personality, but came to the forefront with his hit 2018 single “Old Time Road.” The core song is terrific, but Lil Nas X raises the level by finding a way to combine his urban rap with the pure country sound of Billy Ray Cyrus – Miley’s dad.

The remix with Cyrus went viral in April, 2019 breaking Drake’s record for most streamed song in a week. Though the song ran up multiple charts including number one on Billboard’s Top 100, its listing on the magazine’s Hot Country Songs Chart was taken down because “it does not embrace enough elements of today’s country music to chart” as a country song. Boo to them. Before all the attention around the song, the wit and rhythm of Lil Nas X began to find an audience on the internet when he was 16. He was clever enough to break through the noise by connecting himself to Nicki Minaj. The strength of this creative powerhouse makes Lil Nas X a force to watch in the future.
